This is the eighth and final painting in my Three Trees series.
As I finish a painting I like to capture a value study of my work. This step allows me to evaluate the light and dark balance of my color choices using a monochromatic and black-white scale. This way, if I want the piece to have more dark and middle values verses light values, I can use this study to check that I did not become lost in my colors while painting.
I absolutely love color and try to challenge myself to use new colors in my work. For instance, in “Generations” I used black paint as the base to develop my dark colors. I also added iridescent and interference colors to my mixes to create a more dream- or vision-like impression in the painting. After all “Generations” is not about the present— it’s the possibilities in a future and the life-forces connecting future generations with their past.
Here are two value studies of Generations.
