I’ve looked for a written text regarding the legend of the falls a tour guide shared with us once. So this will be a version from my memory and I hope mostly accurate, if not in detail, than mostly in spirit.
The waterfalls are located along the rim at the head of the Waipio Valley in Hawai’i. It goes something like this...
The king was in love with a beautiful young woman. But unknown to him she was in love with a young man. The king found out and became jealous. The young lovers prayed to the god of the ocean to protect them and guide them to safe refuge from the king. Before they could depart the king ordered them to be separated from each other and executed at the top of the valley wall. There, their blood was shed and ran down the face of the valley cliffs. As their blood flowed it became water. The water cascaded down the side of the cliff face creating two separate waterfalls. The waters from the two falls came ever closer as they fell, until finally at the base of the cliff the water from the two falls joined for eternity in a beautiful clear pool.
The moody hues and serenity of the falls juxtaposed with the tragedy and power of this love story has inspired me to create a series of paintings. so far I have completed four works.
